The Cats of Ghillie Suit Gardening – A Feline History

Let me introduce you to the feline chapter of my garden story.Over the years, several cats have wandered into my life and left their paw prints all over it.First there were Posh and Mr Beckham — my own two beautiful cats. They were inseparable. When Posh passed, Mr Beckham followed about a year later. The house felt very empty without them. Then came Bop.Bop wasn’t even my cat. She belonged to my next-door neighbour and lived in their garage. But one day she decided she preferred my house. She came through the cat flap with her imaginary rucksack and all the confidence of someone who had already signed the lease in her head. She stayed for 9 glorious years, ruling the house like the Boss Cat she was.Bop had a sister called Lula. They didn’t get on. While Bop was alive, Lula stayed next door. But after Bop passed, Lula started doing the polite “just popping in” visits. In the summer when the back door is open, she still comes in, then casually goes upstairs and has a nap in the spare room. She’s never fully moved in, but she’s definitely auditioning for the role. And then there’s the new neighbourhood cat — a friendly little fellow who has started joining the breakfast club. The other morning I looked out and there he was, calmly eating cat food right next to a magpie. Side by side. No drama. Just two very different customers sharing a meal like old friends. So now my garden has:
  • Felicity the fox (and her cubs)
  • The Magpie Air Force, the Crows and Walters and squillions of Littlies
  • The surviving Cyrils
  • Maurice the Mouse (and possibly Roland & Youdirty making guest appearances)
  • And a rotating cast of cats who treat my garden like a feline holiday resort.
Bop would have seen them all off in her prime.Lula is still working up the courage. And the new neighbourhood cat has clearly decided that my garden is the best restaurant in town. The wildlife café has officially gone multi-species.I just hope they all keep the peace… or at least don’t start charging me rent.
