It was one of those beautiful, warm, golden spring days today — the kind Caroline would have loved back when she was still feeling strong. She’s still quietly photosynthesising away with her one brave upright leaf, soaking up the sunshine in her corner. We’re giving her peace until Tom arrives for Operation Caroline.
I made a cup of tea and went to sit on the swing (sorry Felicity — it’s temporarily mine again).
The Littlies were having an absolute party in all the birdbaths, splashing water everywhere like tiny feathered children on a water slide. I had to refill them all twice.
Even a blackbird joined in for a proper bath — wings flapping, water flying, the full spa treatment. Then came one of those sweet little moments that make it all worth it.
I held out a walnut in its shell between my thumb and forefinger. One of the Cyrils came right up, looked at me for a second, and gently took it from my fingers like a polite little gentleman. No grabbing, no drama — just a soft “thank you” moment. For a few minutes the garden felt calm and kind. The usual criminals (Felicity, the Walters, Sheryl & Russell, Commander Oliver’s mob) were off doing their thing, and it was just me, a cup of tea, the Littlies splashing, and a Cyril accepting a walnut like we were old friends.

These are the moments that make all the moss bombs, fox raids, and dramatic plant divas completely worth it.The Wildlife Cafe was in a surprisingly gentle mood today. Long may it last… (though I’m sure the chaos will be back tomorrow).
