Sweet Caroline – The Soundtrack to Wednesday’s Guilt Trip

I’ve just realised something brilliant (and slightly evil). When I named her Caroline all those months ago, I had no idea the universe was quietly handing me the perfect soundtrack for her final act.On Wednesday, when Tom kneels down to tidy her up, I’m going to be sitting on the swing, gently swinging back and forth, breathing down his neck in the friendliest, most guilt-tripping way possible. And every so often, I’m going to softly sing Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”… just loud enough for him to hear every word:
“Where it began…
I can’t begin to know when…
But then I know it’s growin’ strong…
Was in the spring…
And spring became the summer…
Who’d have believed you’d come along…
Hands…
Touchin’ hands…
Reachin’ out…
Touching me, touchin’ you…”
Then I’ll pause, sigh sadly, and whisper:“Poor Caroline…”Bonus prediction:
I’m 99% sure I’m going to accidentally say “Tom, could you give Caroline a good seeing to for me please?” (he doesn't know I've named the cordyline - yet).
His face is going to be a picture when he realises I’m referring to a plant and not some wanton wench waiting indoors for him 😂
The best part?
I didn’t even plan this.
I just named her Caroline because it sounded right with Cordyline.
On Wednesday the garden gets its own soundtrack.Sweet Caroline…
ba ba baaa…
Poor Caroline…
I’m not sure whether to feel guilty or absolutely delighted.Probably both.
